Nonprofits and foundations · GuardenerAI Marketing

Donor email and SMS marketing for nonprofits.

Nonprofits use GuardenerAI Marketing to send newsletters, appeals and welcome journeys to donors and supporters by email, SMS or WhatsApp, with consent and unsubscribes handled, from the same CRM that holds every donor, funder and grant.

Supporters give again when they hear from you at the right moments. Sending from the CRM where the donor record lives means the thank-you, the newsletter and the next appeal all come from one honest list.

Welcome every new supporter

Journeys can start when a new person is created, so a supporter added from an event sign-up or an import gets your welcome series.

  • A welcome email, a wait of a few days, then a story about your work.
  • Split on consent so supporters who opted into SMS also get a short text.
  • Waits are fixed delays you choose.

Appeals to the right people

Segments filter on built-in fields, consent and membership. The donor fields the Nonprofit template adds are custom fields, so they are not segment conditions.

  • Build a static segment of major donors from the Donor details view and send them a personal appeal.
  • Send the general newsletter to everyone opted in to the newsletter topic.
  • RFM personas need gift events sent into GuardenerAI, which is not automatic; most teams use static segments instead.

Consent and trust

Consent is kept per channel and topic, under the opt-in or opt-out mode you choose.

  • Every email has an unsubscribe link, and the unsubscribe page updates consent immediately.
  • Bounces and complaints are suppressed automatically, protecting your sender reputation.
  • A frequency policy and a daily cap keep you from over-asking.

How to set it up

  1. Apply the Nonprofit & Foundations starter template and connect your email provider.
  2. Create topics such as Newsletter and Appeals, and choose opt-in or opt-out.
  3. Build a welcome journey triggered by a new person.
  4. Build a static major-donor segment from the Donor details view before each appeal.
  5. Send through the campaign wizard and review the email metrics.

Worth knowing

  • Segments filter on built-in person and lead fields, consent, segment membership, posted events and RFM groups. They cannot filter on custom fields (including fields a template adds) or on relative dates such as "in the next 30 days".
  • Gifts are not recorded as events automatically, so RFM personas do not fill on their own.
FAQ

Fair questions.

Can I email everyone who gave over a set amount?
Not with a dynamic segment, since Lifetime Giving is a custom field. Build a static segment from the Donor details view instead.
Can supporters choose what they hear about?
Yes. Consent is kept per topic, so someone can stay on the newsletter and leave the appeals.
Can we send by text?
Yes, through Twilio, to supporters who consented to SMS. WhatsApp works through Twilio or Meta.
